Insurance Worker Has Heart Attack From Red Bull
Martin Bowling, an insurance worker who is addicted to the stimulant caffeine prominently found in energy drinks, has suffered a heart attack after drinking 8 cans of Red Bull in short succession.
The man who is 28 years old from Little Wakering, Essex was rushed into hospital earlier this year after collapsing in The Bull pub in Romford. After drinking 2 litres of the wing giving liquid, Mr Bowling has stated that "Energy drinks are death in a can".
He stated "There was no warning signs, I don't know if it hurt, I remember hitting the floor and then waking up in hospital".
Victoria Taylor, senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation said: 'While drinking moderate amounts of caffeine shouldn't impact your heart health, some people can be more sensitive to its effects.
'Children and young people are particularly vulnerable and can have an exaggerated response to caffeine as they will be less used to it. So avoiding energy drinks is sensible to help to limit their consumption of caffeine.'
Gavin Partington, of the British Soft Drinks Association, said: 'A 250 ml can of energy drink typically contains about the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee.
Caffeine is a drug that stimulates the Central Nervous System blocking receptors that react to certain chemicals such in the body such as melatonin, giving the sense of alertness and heightened energy. This causes the blood vessels to widen and blood pressure to rise, aswell as increase heart beat.
